Dog Behaviour Consultations with in-person support in the Wirral, Cheshire, Liverpool and surrounding areas or remote support online in all areas
Working in depth to resolve behaviour issues (such as anxiety, aggression, reactivity, phobias, barking, chasing, separation issues and more) because our dogs don’t always understand what we want from them.
We expect a great deal from our dogs.
Sometimes they don’t adapt to all our expectations and difficulties can arise from their behaviour. The behaviour may actually be normal for that dog but deemed inappropriate by the family in those circumstances. Alternatively the animal may actually be suffering due to the behaviour or struggling to cope and the resulting behaviour is his way of communicating.
The role of the pet behaviour counsellor is to advise the owners about how best to deal with these unwanted behaviours and resolve the issues.
Most problems can be modified or resolved with the correct methods using systems of rewards. I work with you and your dog, step by step.
Our aim is to help you to have a well-behaved pet, acceptable to your family.
I am a full Member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC). This means I have reached the academic and professional requirements needed to meet the standard of a Clinical Animal Behaviourist set by the Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC).
A behaviour consultation requires a referral from your vet, in order to rule out any medical conditions that may be contributing to unwanted behaviour. The form can be downloaded here.
Dog behaviour issues may include:
Reactivity or aggression towards people or other dogs
Resource guarding, including difficulties in handling or grooming
Phobias (thunder, fireworks, guns, traffic etc.)
Barking at home, in the car, or on walks
Unwanted behaviour in some situations, for example at the veterinary surgery or groomers
Chasing (livestock, cats, postmen, cyclists etc.)
House soiling and indoor urine marking
Separation problems
Over-excitement
If you are experiencing difficulties with animals other than dogs or cats, please contact us as we may be able to offer help or recommend someone else with specialist knowledge.
Dog Behaviour Consultation Service
The service consists of:
An initial consultation (approx. 2 hours) online via Zoom
A full report is sent to you along with relevant handouts
Copy of the report is sent to the referring veterinary surgeon
Either two or four further Zoom calls, depending on which option you book. Follow up calls last approximately 30-45 mins each, and are arranged at suitable intervals according to your needs
Additional contact via email as appropriate
Contact with your veterinary surgeon if appropriate
The consultation via Zoom provides time to really unpick the motivations behind your pet’s behaviour. Erica does not necessarily need to see the unwanted behaviour to know what to do about it.
Zoom is more effective than an in-person consultation in the early stages at least, as there is no need to have a visitor in the home, which many animals find stressful and difficult to cope with. Erica can then observe the natural behaviour of the dog, without them being distracted by her presence.

FAQs

It ensures that nothing medical is causing or contributing to the issue. Pain can show in changing behaviours and some physical issues can show themselves as behaviour issues.
Your veterinary surgeon is aware of the issues and I can discuss with them at any stage, for example if prescription medication or neutering is being considered.
-
Zoom allows me to see your dog showing their normal behaviours without the stress of an unknown person. In addition, you can show me the home environment.
Zoom has many advantages, but it does have some disadvantages. Therefore, if you feel that a home visit or a rehabilitation session would be useful, we can arrange this at any stage after our initial meeting, meaning we get the best of both worlds.
-
Dont worry, Jan will send instructions over. If there’s any difficulties on the day, we can always speak on the phone. Either I can talk you through the process or we can use a combination of zoom and phone.
-
If you would like help accessing zoom, we can provide that.
If you are unable to use zoom for whatever reason, let us know and we can discuss face to face options.
it is important to me for us to adapt according to what suits you.

Behaviour consultations are best for anything involving aggression, deep rooted or long established issues.
One to one packages are best for anything more easily approached, such as one or two specific training issues.
-
No, the cost is for the consultation and time, regardless of how many animals.
For a behaviour consultation, however, I need to predominantly work with the dog(s) who have been referred by the veterinary surgeon.
-
Yes please! It is helpful for as many of the family to be involved as possible, to whatever extent is appropriate. When a dog lives in a family, everyone affects, and is affected by, his behaviour. It is important that we all work together to ensure as much consistency as possible.

I have 35 years experience of running my behaviour business.
I have worked with thousands of pets and their families.
I am a member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors and the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. I am registered with the Animal Behaviour and Training Council as a Clinical Animal Behaviourist and an Animal Training Instructor.
I use reward based methods and am strongly committed to improving the lives of those who work with me.
I am lucky to share my life and my house with cats, dogs and other pets.
If you have any concerns or queries, contact us and we can have a chat.
Whatever your choices, please avoid places recommending you to use aversive equipment, fear and intimidation or bullying methods. I have many references of why these methods, as well as being inhumane, can add to the unwanted behaviour rather than resolve it. Please do feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss this.

I completely understand.
The costs of the packages reflect the time and expertise I invest in working with you.
I bring experience, qualifications and practical solutions and ensure that my knowledge is kept up-to-date with Continuing Professional Development.
You get support in whatever form is needed, for the time we are working together.
I will work with you, however you choose, until we have resolved the issues to your satisfaction.
If the financial side of things is causing difficulties, contact us and we can discuss a payment plan to spread the cost over time.
If the cost is totally prohibitive, consider fully qualified alternatives such as the Dog’s Trust helpline.

Many insurance policies cover behaviour consultations. However, we would advise that you check your own policy as there are many variations.
We are happy to liaise with insurance companies at any stage.
Insurance companies will only cover the behaviour consultation packages, not the training sessions.
-
First, ensure that your policy covers my fees.
Your vet would normally be required to fill in the form and this would be sent off with the receipt we will send to you.
Add any other receipts for anything else which is covered, for example Adaptil products bought from your veterinary surgery. You may need to check with your insurance company if additional items are covered.
Your dog’s clinical history may also be needed.
The insurance company may need me to fill out a form and/or send a copy of the report or additional notes.
